T- lymphocytes are the sentinels that work after receiving the processed antigen is presented to them antigen presenting cells. They form the more specific and specialized form of immunity, secreting cytokines and leading to the production of antibodies.
This paradigm is well known and established but how do T cells get all the energy for this taxing work has never been elucidated. T-cells undergo metabolic changes when C3b, an immune mediator signalled in an autocrine manner increases nutrient uptake, glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation.
