Social Media has become a soulful companion for many of us. One might argue that in developing countries such as India, where many struggle for a meal or shelter, social media is not of consequence. Looking at the current state one might tend to believe it but we cannot deny the far and wide reaching effects of it in the country.
Cellular mobile devices are a reality and in this age, I myself have seen its reach to remote villages and to every social strata. The power of social media is such that has given rise to an internet celebrity culture. Some of them so successful as to find their wax forms at Madame Tussaud's.
Empowering:
Yes this power of the internet via social media has empowered people in many ways. If you have a phone with a camera and you manage to record some wrong doing, likes and shares, spreads the message and even the government agencies in many cases have responded and the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Downside: The downside of this is is a kind of social media trial of a person without the whole truth or facts, which is wrong.
Spreading a message:
Social media also comes in handy when you want to reach to an audience to convey some message. This is fast and quick and you get the message across in less time, also a wider reach.
Downside: The same platform can be abused to spread hate messages which can cause tension in the society.
Cyber bullying:
As if the bullies in real life were not enough, these bullies often referred to as cyber trolls or just trolls can really corner someone and cause real trauma to people.
The case of the present Indian government in the light of social media:
While PM modi is social media savvy and so is his cabinet, a lot of times he's criticized heavily for that. Now on social media two factions are evident
1. The Modi supporters
2. The Modi Haters
While I am for both as there must exist a balance of all forces in nature, but in this case the people have taken it a bit too far. Some of the recent unfortunate incidents have been discussed so much so that it has reached a point where it seems like that there is a dark and bleak environment in India and people are living in constant fear and there is so much intolerance.
While criticizing is important people should be RESPONSIBLE in their approach so as not to cause and real harm while living in a virtual world.
While there may be concerns but I don't find it affecting day to day life and activities of general people on the ground.
So while we should cherish the fruits of the modern age, we should use it with caution!!
