Earlier today during one of my many thoughtful moments I tweeted (@mannuabhimanyu) the following :
"We human beings are essentially sadist otherwise how would you explain so much pain and suffering we inflict on each other ? #abhimanthan",
"Where would you find love, care in a world where we have taught ourselves to hate! #musings #abhimanthan"
reflective on the apathy and general sense of non-caring that we have developed for other human beings.
Pretty sure that earlier humans or civilizations would not be very Darwinian in their outlook of "survival of the fittest"!
Of course people doing well for themselves and contributing to the world should be lauded but I think the habit of putting them a pedestal or making them sacrosanct has created such a divide among the "achievers" and "non-achievers" have strengthen the belief system that results in tanking of one's self-evaluation and accepting the role as a "lesser" contributor to the society.
Lesser or not the fact is that all of us are humans and deserve similar opportunities but in absence of that in the present social scenario a more integrative approach is required and the local governments must play an important part in it.
I think we as a civilization has become so used to the idea of poverty and unemployment that we always find some or other excuse to justify it. There is always a reason and always an opportunity to improve it.
Thinking about in terms of why would people who are homeless, jobless would want to live like that, is that choice or something forced on them by the societal system, which values the people who have some degree or education and DISCARDS or disregards others.
In the present system everyone cannot (I say this with extreme sadness and believe that everyone should get the opportunity) not be a doctor or an engineer or for that matter super successful (in terms of acquiring wealth of course)!
Not so long ago people learned trades, either in schools or at jobs and were happy to earn a living, there has been a serious degradation in the belief system where people don't think these won't take them far in life and don't want to do it anymore (adding to the pool of unemployed people).
One of the major roadblock is that as a society and of course at a policy level we have failed to attach value to such services and incentivize the jobs. If we can do that there would be a lot of job creation and many people will feel appreciated and make the world a better place ( a cliched line but..)!
I think we should do the following steps for the creating such a system:
1. A national registry/database should exist in every country of any kind of training an individual receives, so that one can be approached if need be. Such database would also give us a kind of estimate the skilled workers and will enable us to identify the magnitude of the problem. Knowing the problem and understanding it at a fundamental state is so important to even think about eradicating it.
2. Strict implementation of minimal wages policies in a state. People requesting a service should be made to login their request and a subsequent relevant payment made and updated on a system.
3. I FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT IT, is adding value to the service provider. That can be done in a manner that the minimum wage of a person rise subsequently with the years of experience so that it adds value to the trade. It will effect two changes: a. People who are service providers will be motivated to work as they can see a growth for themselves in near future; b. It will create an example and motivation for others to follow.
The contention of such things would be that people might always end of requesting the people who are beginners and would cost them more, but then this could be addressed by policy that for every beginner that you use you will have to use an experienced person thus creating a space for both to co-exist.
I think that a similar structure can be applied in agriculture as well but that is a whole other discussion and would write about it later.
Disclaimer: This is my opinion, based on my understanding and is in no way an expert commentary or an economic or societal or politic piece. It is just a suggestion that I wanted to put out there for those who are listening !
